Women in Medicine Month: Dr. Priya Vakharia Builds on Her Mom’s Example
Long before Dr. Priya Vakharia began her career in ophthalmology, she was already learning lessons that shape how she practices today.
And she didn't have far to look to find them.
Growing up in Clovis, New Mexico, Dr. Vakharia watched both of her parents work as family medicine physicians. Their example gave her an early look at the relationships physicians can build with their patients.
“My mom has been my greatest mentor and role model,” Dr. Vakharia said. “She taught me the value of hard work, resilience, and grit, but most importantly, she showed me that compassion and truly caring for your patients are at the heart of being a great physician.”
In recognition of Women in Medicine Month, the Florida Society of Ophthalmology is highlighting women from across the Society whose work is helping shape ophthalmology. We’re sharing their perspectives on what drew them to the specialty, the women who influenced their careers and the advice they have for those following in their footsteps.
Today, Dr. Vakharia is a partner at Retina Vitreous Associates of Florida and a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital and her fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Tufts New England Eye Center/Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston.
Ophthalmology has given Dr. Vakharia a way to improve patients’ quality of life while continuing to grow professionally.
“I was drawn to ophthalmology because it allows me to make a meaningful difference in someone’s quality of life in a very tangible way,” she said. “I also appreciate that it’s a career that has allowed me to grow professionally while still making room for the people and things that matter most to me.”
The example Dr. Vakharia saw growing up continues to inform what she believes a fulfilling career in medicine can look like.
“Don’t feel like you have to choose between a successful career and a fulfilling life outside of medicine. You can accomplish both,” Dr. Vakharia said. “It may not always happen at the same time or look perfectly balanced, but with the right support, priorities, and confidence in yourself, you can build a life and career you’re proud of.”
